How we estimate HVAC costs and sizes

AC Install Cost exists to give homeowners a realistic number before they call a contractor. Every figure on this site is a planning estimate built from transparent inputs — not a quote, and not a substitute for a professional assessment. This page explains exactly how our calculators work and where the numbers come from.

How the cost estimates are built

Our installed-cost ranges start from a national baseline for each system type — central air conditioning, heat pump, AC plus furnace, and ductless mini-split — expressed for a typical three-ton residential job. We then adjust that baseline for three things: the size (tonnage) of the system, a state-level multiplier that reflects local labor and permit costs, and whether new ductwork is required. The result is a low-to-high range rather than a single number, because real quotes vary with equipment brand, efficiency tier, home access, and contractor demand.

How the sizing estimates are built

Our sizing tools use a simplified load calculation based on the principles of ACCA Manual J. We start from your conditioned square footage and climate zone, then adjust for ceiling height, insulation quality, sun exposure, and window area. Cooling results are converted to tonnage and rounded to standard equipment sizes; heating results are expressed in BTU. We deliberately calibrate these models to avoid oversizing, because an oversized system short-cycles, controls humidity poorly, and wastes energy. A sizing estimate here is a starting point for conversation — a licensed contractor should always perform a full Manual J load calculation before you buy equipment.

Our data and how often we update it

State electricity rates, climate zones, and regional cost multipliers are drawn from public energy and construction-cost data and reviewed on a regular schedule, typically ahead of each cooling season. Efficiency references reflect the current SEER2 and AFUE standards. When federal or state incentive programs change — for example, the expiration of the federal Section 25C heat-pump credit at the end of 2025 — we update the affected tools and note the change rather than leaving stale guidance in place.
